Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center

Woodbridge, Virginia, United States

Project involved construction of a new 15,800 SQM, four-level hospital with full structural engineering. Its structural framing was designed to support two additional future floors, a walkway to the Potomac Hospital Prototype Room building, equipment pads, renovation of the mechanical plant, renovations in the adjacent Building 3A and new wall openings, a new loading dock and storage space, several new retaining walls, a one-story infill building between Building 3A and G-3 for mechanical equipment space, and a walkway to Building 3A. Its shell construction was valued at $40 million (USD). Most importantly, construction cost savings that exceeded $100,000 (USD) in value was realized by McMullan’s recommendation of having further geotechnical testing in order to use a geopier foundation system over a conventional drilled-pier foundation.
